The WSU AccessID is a unique identification code assigned to each WSU applicant/student and new faculty and staff person. It is the key to accessing computing services and resources at Wayne State — such as WSU Pipeline, WSU E-mail, the Blackboard Learning System, or WSU administrative systems (WSU staff only).
Q How do I get a WSU AccessID?
When you apply to be admitted as a Wayne State University student, or when you are hired as a new employee, a WSU AccessID is automatically assigned for you. The AccessID is two letters followed by four digits (e.g., xy5678).
If you don't know what your AccessID is, you can find it in the following locations:
Your initial AccessID password is the 9-digit Personal ID (PID) number printed on the WSU OneCard and in the letter mailed to new applicants.
To get help with your WSU AccessID or password, contact the C&IT Help Desk at (313) 577-4778.
Employees who plan on retiring — if you wish to continue using your AccessID, you must obtain a WSU AccessID Request Form from the WSU Total Compensation and Wellness office and submit it at least two weeks before retiring. For more information about the WSU AccessID for WSU retirees, see the AccessID Retiree FAQ.
Q What do I need to use AccessID services?
In order to use the AccessID services available to you, you need to:
Q
How do I get started using my AccessID for WSU's Pipeline?
Go to pipeline.wayne.edu.
Enter your six character AccessID, enter the password for your AccessID, and
click OK.
If you need help using the Pipeline, click WSU Pipeline FAQ on the login screen.
Q How do I get started using my AccessID for e-mail?
Step 1: Decide which e-mail software meets your needs. You have a number of choices. All let you work with e-mail in the graphical format most people are already familiar with. You can use:
You can use IMAP and POP protocol with an e-mail software program.
Step 2: Obtain the e-mail software you've decided to use and install it on your computer.
Q Is there a charge for WSU AccessID e-mail?
No, Wayne State students and employees can use their WSU AccessID for e-mail for no charge. However, there is a charge for printing e-mail in libraries or labs.
Q What is my WSU e-mail address?
Your address on Wayne State's central e-mail system consists of your WSU AccessID, followed by the @ sign and "wayne.edu". For example:
xy6789@wayne.edu
As an alternative to using the alphanumeric WSU AccessID in your e-mail address, you can designate an E-Mail Name that you or your e-mail correspondents can use in your WSU e-mail address, as shown below:
E-Mail_Name@wayne.edu
The e-mail address using the AccessID (e.g., xy6789@wayne.edu) and the address using the E-Mail Name (E-Mail_Name@wayne.edu) can be typed in UPPER, lower, or MiXeD case.
Q I currently use another e-mail system. Can I continue to use it?
Yes, you can continue using another mail system if you like and still take advantage of the other services your WSU AccessID offers: having a listing in the WSU Online Directory, dial-in access to the Internet and Wayne State's network, WSU's Pipeline, download free software, etc.
However, to ensure that you get any messages sent to your AccessID e-mail address, set mail forwarding:
Q If I switch to AccessID e-mail, what do I do about the e-mail discussion lists I'm on?
Before switching to your AccessID e-mail address, you need to unsubscribe from each electronic discussion list (such as a LISTSERV list) using your old e-mail address. (Look up the instructions sent to you when you subscribed to the discussion list.) Next send a new subscription request using your AccessID e-mail address.
Another way to have your address changed on a LISTSERV discussion list is to contact the list owner and ask that person to modify your address. Usually you can send an e-mail message to a list owner by addressing it as follows:
owner-listname@domain.name
For listname, substitute the name of the discussion list to which you are subscribed; and for domain.name, substitute the Internet domain name of the site where the list is located (the part after the @ sign in the list's address).
Q If someone wants to send e-mail to my AccessID, how can they find my address?
WSU's AccessID E-mail System and Online Directory work together. Colleagues, associates, and friends can search for you or your e-mail address in Wayne State's Online Directory.
Q What information is in a listing in WSU's Online Directory?
Wayne State student: Your WSU Directory listing shows your name, WSU AccessID e-mail address, school/college, and major.
Wayne State employee (faculty or staff): Your WSU Directory listing shows your name, school/college/division that employs you, job title, work telephone number, WSU AccessID, e-mail address, department, and campus address.
Student employed by Wayne State or employee who also is a student: Your WSU Directory listing shows your academic school/college and major and also work-related information about you—your name, the school/college/division and department that employs you, your job title, work telephone number, WSU AccessID and e-mail address, and campus address.
Q What if I don't want my name displayed in WSU's Online Directory?
WSU students—you can request that your Directory information
be kept private by signing a
Release of
Directory Information
form with the Registrar's Office. University employees (including student assistants)
cannot have their information kept private.
WSU employees, including students who work for the University—you cannot remove your name, school/college/division, job title, work telephone number, WSU AccessID, e-mail address, department, and campus address because they are Wayne State University information.
Q How can I correct information contained in my WSU Directory listing?
For information on updating your WSU Directory listing, go to http://networks.wayne.edu/onlinedirectory/ and click How to Update Individual Listing.
Q What is a proxy server? Why do I need to use it?
Because of licensing requirements, certain databases and systems on Wayne State Web sites are available for the exclusive use of WSU students, faculty, and staff. This includes the WSU Library Databases and the Banner System Training materials. (WSU Libraries may permit database use by persons not affiliated with Wayne State in WSU Libraries only.)
