| Q1 | What is an E-mail Name? |
| An E-mail Name is a personalized name that you set to use as part of your e-mail address, such as john_doe@wayne.edu or jane22@wayne.edu. You can use the E-mail Name in place of your AccessID (e.g., xy6789) for e-mail only. | |
| Q2 | Do I have to set an E-mail Name? |
| No, you don't. However, the advantage of setting an E-mail Name is you have an e-mail address that others will find easier to remember and people can recognize when they see. | |
| Q3 | What are the requirements for an E-mail Name? |
Your E-mail Name:
|
|
| Q4 | Can my E-mail Name be reassigned to someone else? |
| No, your E-mail Name is yours for as long as you are associated with Wayne State University. No one can request that your E-mail Name be reassigned to him or her. If, however, you decide to change your E-mail Name to something new, someone else can select your old name. | |
| Q5 | Can I continue to receive mail sent to my AccessID (e.g., xy6789@wayne.edu) instead of an E-mail Name? |
| Yes, you will continue to receive it without any problems. | |
| Q6 | What happens if I don't set an E-mail Name? |
| If you don't set an E-mail Name, mail sent to your AccessID e-mail address will still arrive without problems. However, you can only use your name (e.g. John_Doe@wayne.edu) if you set an E-mail Name. | |
| Q7 | Is there anything else I have to do after I set an E-mail Name? |
| If you want to use your E-mail Name for all your e-mail, we suggest that you send a note to people who regularly send you e-mail telling them your preferred e-mail address (e.g. John_Doe@wayne.edu). | |
| Q8 | Can I change my E-mail Name? |
Yes, you can change your E-mail Name at any
time. However, if you do this you may miss e-mail sent to you at your
old E-mail Name.
To set or change your E-mail Name, go to:
|
|
| Q9 | If I change my E-mail Name, what happens to mail sent to the old name? |
If you change your E-mail Name, your old E-mail
Name will be available for someone else to use.
|
|
| Q10 | Can I use my E-mail Name in other places where I'm prompted for my AccessID? |
| Your E-mail Name is mainly for e-mail. You may be able to use it for some other instances where you would use your AccessID, but not for all instances. | |
| Q11 | Do I have to change anything on my e-mail software when I set an E-mail Name? |
| You do not have to change anything in your
e-mail software unless you want to use your E-mail Name for all your
e-mail. All mail programs have a place in which you can set your identity — that is, your e-mail address and the name that shows up in the From: field of your message. If you want to use your E-mail Name for all your e-mail, put your address with your E-mail Name in the "email address" field (e.g., j_doe@wayne.edu). Then put your full name in the "your name" field (e.g., John Doe). |
|
| Q12 | Will my LISTSERV mailing list subscriptions be affected by a change to an E-mail Name? |
| There is no change with incoming mail
from a LISTSERV list. All mail sent to either your AccessID (e.g., xy6789@wayne.edu)
or your E-mail Name (e.g., j_doe@wayne.edu) will still come
to you. However, depending on how you set your identity in your client software (see the question above), you may not be able to reply to the list or unsubscribe from it. LISTSERV lists are set up so that they only allow you to send a message to the list from the e-mail address you used when you joined. So, if you joined using your AccessID (e.g., xy6789@wayne.edu), and you send mail using your E-mail Name (e.g., j_doe@wayne.edu), LISTSERV will not recognize you and will not accept the message. |
|
| Q13 | I am the owner of a LISTSERV mailing list. How will a change to an E-mail Name affect me? |
| If you set an E-mail Name and use it as your current e-mail address, in order to manage your list, you will need to update your list header with your new e-mail address, AND you will need to register a new LISTSERV password for your new e-mail address. | |
| Q14 | Does the E-mail Name apply to School of Medicine, College of Science and other Wayne State e-mail? |
| E-mail Names are only for e-mail accounts that have addresses ending in "@wayne.edu" (e.g., xy6789@wayne.edu). If you are using an e-mail account supplied by the WSU School of Medicine (address ends with "@med.wayne.edu"), by the College of Science (address ends with "@sun.science.wayne.edu"), or any WSU department or division other than Computing & Information Technology (C&IT), the E-mail Name feature does not apply to your e-mail ID. | |
| Q15 | If I'm denied the use of an E-mail Name due to a violation of policy, can I appeal it? |
| Yes, to submit an appeal, contact the Computing & Information Technology (C&IT) Help Desk (See contact information below.) Decisions on appeals will be made by the Associate Vice President and Chief Information Officer for C&IT. |
If you have further questions, contact the C&IT Help Desk at (313) 577-4778 or e-mail to helpdesk@wayne.edu.
