Setting up an Internet Connection in a WSU Office
Most buildings on Wayne State's main, medical, and health sciences campuses
and at the Oakland Center and University Center at Macomb are connected to WSU's
data communications network and are wired for an Ethernet connection. With an
Ethernet connection, you can plug your computer into the data jack in the telephone
wallplate and connect directly to WSU's data network and the Internet.
To request a new Ethernet connection to Wayne State's campus data communications
network and the Internet:
- On WSU's medical campus: Call WSU School of Medicine, Medical
School Information Systems, (313) 577-1527.
- On WSU's main campus and in all other locations: Call
the Computing & Information Technology (C&IT) Telecommunications
Help Desk, (313) 577-1977, or go to the Telecommunications
Web page and
submit the Telephone Service Req. form.
What are the requirements for an Ethernet connection?
To use an Ethernet connection to access WSU's data communications network and
the Internet, you need the following:
- The WSU building in which you work must be connected to the campus data
network. Check with your system administrator to find out your building's
network status.
- Your computer needs a 10/100 BASE-T Ethernet adapter (Network Interface
Card – NIC) and TCP/IP Internet communications software, which is included
on Mac OS 9.x/OSX and Windows 2000/XP Pro.
If you need to buy an Ethernet adapter, check with your system administrator
for specific requirements.
Where can I get help?
- Make your first call for help to your system
administrator. That person
knows the most about your connection and can often fix a problem quickly.
- If you need further help or don't have a system administrator, contact
the C&IT Help Desk by phone (313-577-4778) or email (helpdesk@wayne.edu).
- If you have trouble connecting to WSUnet or the Internet, you can't access
a shared system or server, or you want to report a network problem when
using a campus network connection
call C&IT's Enterprise Operations Service, 313-577-4746, 24 hours a day, seven
days a week.
