Guest Wireless Access at Wayne State

What is it?

Wireless Internet is available for guests and visitors to Wayne State's main and medical campuses — in the same buildings serviced by the university's Wireless Network, wireless@wayne. Guest Wireless Access allows guest speakers from off-campus, those attending conferences, and others visiting campus for a short time, to connect a laptop computer or a Pocket PC or Palm OS-based PDA with wireless capability to the Internet.

Temporary Wireless Internet access must be sponsored by a WSU employee. It does not include access to any university computing system or to printing, copying, or parking services.

Who can set up Guest Wireless Access and for how long?

Any WSU employee can create a temporary AccessID that a guest or visitor to WSU's main or medical campuses can use for Wireless Internet service. In doing so, the employee accepts responsibility for the guest's use of network resources, according to Wayne State's policy on the Acceptable Use of Information Technology Resources.

WSU employees are permitted to create up to 50 temporary AccessIDs at a time for wireless Internet use on campus. A temporary AccessID can be active up to seven days.

How do I set up Guest Wireless Access?

To set up Guest Wireless Access, follow these steps:

  1. Go to the Guest Wireless Access System page. Type your WSU AccessID and the same password you use for WSU E-mail, WSU Pipeline, and Blackboard.
  2. Click the Log in button.
  3. Select the number of Guest AccessIDs needed and the number of days you want the ID(s) to be active.
  4. Check the box to certify that:
    1. you read Wayne State's policy on the Acceptable Use of Information Technology Resources and have explained its requirements to your guest(s) who also has agreed to abide by its rules and
    2. you will keep a record of each person to whom you distribute the Guest AccessID(s) along with contact information.
Note: You are responsible for your guest's observance of the university policy and are the contact for any security or policy concerns related to the use of the temporary AccessID(s) issued under your name.
  5. Click the Create AccessIDs button.
  6. Click the Log out link.

The system sends an e-mail message to your AccessID e-mail address listing the temporary Guest Wireless AccessID(s) along with the special password associated with each. (This information is also available on the Guest Wireless Access System at any time.)

As soon as you receive the confirmation e-mail, you can distribute the ID(s) and your sponsored guest(s) can connect to the wireless@wayne network on campus.

What does a visitor need to use WSU Guest Wireless Internet access?

Information about wireless@wayne system requirements, wireless Internet software and hardware specifications, and installing a wireless card is available on Wayne State's wireless@wayne Web page. Also included is a list of wireless service locations on our main and medical school campuses and instructions on how to connect to the WSU Wireless Network.

Refer your guest(s) to this Web page before they visit campus, so they can familiarize themselves with network requirements and instructions on how to access Wayne State's Wireless Network.

Where can I or my guest get help?
