Wayne State University faculty and their students have access to five innovative technology spaces starting this fall semester, including reservable labs with power supplies for personal devices, Apple computers, course-related software, and more.  

These new spaces are available thanks to the strong relationships maintained between Computing and Information Technology (C&IT) Campus and Classroom Technology Support (CCTS) teams and university schools and colleges. CCTS is the arm of C&IT that supports classroom technology and collaborates with schools, colleges, and departments across the campus to provide all Warriors with the technology needed to be successful. 

These partnerships grow from organic conversations in everyday work and allow maximum utilization of IT resources—that means C&IT deploys and supports both the hardware and software so schools and colleges can utilize the spaces while sharing resources to directly support students. 

New campus tech spaces 

The CCTS team has been working hard with academic partners all summer to increase access to computers and software.  

• All new and updated workspaces can be reserved through the Office of the Registrar 
• Course-related software can be added to any lab upon request and C&IT is working to secure Adobe licensing 

Manoogian 

Manoogian has four available spaces, including a new Apple lab in room 328 (instruction and teaching only) with 30 macOS computers donated by the College of Education (and soon to include the Adobe Creative Suite donated by the College of Fine, Performing, and Communication arts.)

“Working collaboratively with C&IT and having a computer lab maintained with computers and software will allow our faculty to prepare students with the skills they need to complete their program of study,” said Facilities and Web Manager at the College of Education Donna Carroll. “[This change] allowed our college to move forward with our new project of a Hy Flex room... which is something our faculty and staff requested when surveyed earlier this year. So, we’ll now have the benefit of having the computer lab over in Manoogian and having a Hy Flex room in the College of Education.” 

This also includes a bring-your-own-device lab in room 368, which includes a power supply so students can use their own laptops. 

Other available AVTC labs in Manoogian include rooms 308 and 358 which have 30 Windows computers each plus 30 additional seats for students to use their own devices, offering 60 total seats a piece. 

STEM Innovation Learning Center 

STEM room 24 is also now open as a general-purpose computer lab, including 24 computers equipped with software like SPSS and ArcGIS. This workspace is possible thanks to a donation from the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences that allows more students to access the university-owned computers. The Department of Political Science donated the hardware and furniture from the Faculty/Administration Building (FAB). 

“C&IT managed the transfer of the [computer lab] to its new location with the highest degree of expertise and speed,” said Professor of Political Science and Department Chair Daniel Geller. “We look forward to using the lab in the STEM building for our classes this semester and beyond.”  

Although CLAS faculty receive priority booking as a thank-you for their support, this space is open to all schools and colleges. 

General-purpose updates 

In addition to these updates, C&IT has made a commitment to upgrade classroom technology and all general-purpose classrooms have received new audio/visual equipment. 

These updates are a part of C&IT’s advanced seven-year refresh plan that extends to over 200 general-purpose classroom locations across the main campus and two extension centers. The plan contributes to the department’s commitment to supporting Wayne State enrollment, student success, and teaching excellence, and focuses on upgrading the technology with: 

• Intuitive design 
• Support for both onsite and offsite instruction 
• Agnostic lecture capture capabilities 
• Ability to track A/V usage
