Banner 8.2 and Related Systems Upgrade

Initiative Overview

A university-wide project to upgrade the Banner Administrative System at Wayne State University to release 8.2 is in motion. The Administrative Applications and Academic and Core Applications departments in Computing & Information Technology (C&IT) are leading this project. Management and staff in these departments are working closely with key business area contacts from WSU administrative offices such as Human Resources, Finance, and Student Records and Registration, to name a few.

UPDATE: Initially, C&IT announced that the Banner System would be upgraded to release 8.1. The Financial Aid regulatory release for the 2010-2011 academic year requires an upgrade of Banner. This requires a Banner upgrade to release 8.2. by the end of January 2010 in order to start processing Financial Aid for the 2010-2011 academic year.

Internationalization of data

One of the major functional changes in Banner 8.2 is the internationalization of the data. This requires the character set conversion of all Banner data to UTF-8, which is a global data standard. We will learn more about how these changes affect system users during the testing period.

Additional information

The Banner 8.2 test environment became available to key users on June 15, 2009. These employes were identified by business area to test the new release of the Banner applications (HR, Finance, Student, etc.). The test data is a copy of the Banner 7.x data that was running in production as of February 22, 2009.
